Preventing Falls From Windows

Every year over 390,000 children under the age of 15 are taken to hospital with injuries resulting from a fall at home or in the garden.

Although most falls are not serious, some can lead to injuries with long term consequences.

Falls are the most common type of accident in the home, accounting for 44% of all childhood injuries.

About 10 children in the UK die each year as a result of falling from balconies, windows and stairs.

Impact Housing want to bring this to your attention and inform you of the risks regarding falls from first floor windows within your property

You can reduce the risk of falls by –

  • Always supervising children, especially when they have access to an open window
  • Locking your windows – are your windows locked when you’re not supervising children to stop them from opening the window? Do you know where your window keys are?
  • Altering the layout of the room – keeping furniture,  such as sofas, beds and tables away from windows.  Furniture placed under windows can allow children to climb up to the window and open the handle though they may not be able to do this when standing on the floor. Can the location of furniture be altered to remove this risk?

Window restrictors can be fitted to first floor windows to stop the window opening to its full width reducing the risk of a child climbing out of the window.

Impact Housing can arrange for a window restrictor to be fitted to your property if you have any concerns.  Please ring 03448 736 290
